Is a 3D-printed cookie cutter food safe?

It's perfectly understandable to ask this question — anything that touches food deserves to be verified. Moreover, 3D-printed cookie cutters look and behave differently from classic metal ones, so it's natural to wonder if they're safe. Let's break it down factually, without oversimplification.

The short answer upfront: yes. Our cookie cutters are certified for food contact, a certification verified by a laboratory — so it's not just a general assurance, but a specifically tested property of our products. We delve into exactly how this works and what it means in practice below.

What is PLA and why is it used for cookie cutters?

PLA (polylactic acid) is a bioplastic made from renewable resources — most commonly corn starch or sugarcane. Unlike plastics made from petroleum, it is biodegradable. The same substance has also been used in medicine for decades, for example, in absorbable sutures, which in itself speaks volumes about how well the material is tolerated fundamentally.

For kitchen use, PLA has one practical limitation: it is not suitable for temperatures above approximately 50–60 °C. At higher temperatures, it starts to soften and lose its shape. Therefore, a cookie cutter should not be put in a dishwasher (where water is typically above 60 °C) or, for example, on a window sill in summer behind glass.

It's also important that not all PLA is automatically suitable for food contact — it depends on the purity of the granulate and the colorants used by the filament manufacturer. Quality manufacturers therefore offer filaments explicitly declared as suitable for food contact, and precisely these should be used for anything that touches dough.

What does the legislation say?

Materials that come into contact with food are regulated in the EU by Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, and specifically for plastics by Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. These establish, among other things, migration limits — i.e., how much substance a material may release into food (or its simulant) — and require the manufacturer to issue a written declaration of conformity for the material. In other words: there is a clearly defined legal framework according to which plastic kitchen utensils, whether 3D-printed or manufactured otherwise, can be verified as genuinely suitable for food contact.

Precisely this is why we didn't just leave it to general compliance with the standard: our cookie cutters are certified for food contact, which has been verified by a laboratory. So it's not just that the material theoretically complies — it's a specifically tested property directly of the products we send you.

How to properly care for a cookie cutter

Even material that meets all standards requires proper handling:

  • Wash by hand, in lukewarm water with dish soap — not in the dishwasher.
  • Dry thoroughly after washing before storing the cookie cutter, so no moisture remains on it.
  • Do not store in direct sunlight or near an oven or stove — heat gradually deforms the material.
  • Do not soak it in water for extended periods — with layered 3D printing, this increases the risk of moisture getting into the tiny gaps between layers.
